オールド香蘭社　「色絵黒地課長唐草文」カップ＆ソーサーの「ブラックホーソン」

2025年3月～4月、ニューヨークの日本クラブで 開催された「日本コーヒーカップ物語ー日米の懸け橋」展に展示した香蘭社のカップ＆ソーサー「色絵黒地花鳥唐草文」の地色の黒が珍しく、ある展覧会図録にはこの色のことが「ブラック　ホーソン」と書かれていた。それで説明文にも当初それを書いたが、英訳の説明するときに、どうしてもこのホーソンがわからず、ネィティブチェックをお願いしている人たちに聞いてもわからないという。それで結局その説明を外した。

その後、ノリタケ・コレクターのAki Oga Katoさんが香蘭社に聞いてくださって、この表記の英語がBlack Hawthorn とわかった！

日本語でサンザシ（セイヨウサンザシ）,イギリスではこの季節よく見るHawthorn Berryという、赤い実をつけて、ジャムにすると黒くなる。この色のことだったのだ！

５月に花が咲くので英語の別名をMay Flowerともいう。なるほどなあ。Hawthorn　Berryを思いつけなかったのは私の怠慢だ！

From March to April 2025, the exhibition ‘The Story of Nippon Coffee Cups: A Bridge Between Japan and the United States’ was held at the Nippon Club in New York. The black base colour of the cup and saucer ‘Coloured-painted Black Ground with Flower, Bird, and Vine Pattern’ by Koransha, which was displayed at the exhibition, was rare, and in one exhibition catalogue, this colour was described as ‘ブラック　ホーソン.’　Initially, this was included in the description, but when translating it into English, the term ‘ホーソン’ was unclear, and even after consulting native English speakers, it remained unclear. As a result, the description was ultimately removed.

Later, Ms. Aki Oga Kato, a Noritake collector, contacted Kōran-sha and clarified that the correct English term is ‘Black Hawthorn’!

In Japanese, it’s called ‘Sanzashi,’ and in England, it’s commonly seen in this season as ‘Hawthorn Berry,’ which has red berries that turn black when made into jam. That’s what this colour was referring to!

Since it blooms in May, it’s also known as ‘May Flower’ in English. I see now. I should have thought of ‘Hawthorn Berry’—it was my oversight!
