花器ではなくて薬壺ーマドリッド装飾美術館にて

マドリッドの装飾美術館で、南蛮漆器展を見終えて常設展の方に移り、陶磁器のところで展示されてある壷の形状と大きさから花器だと頭から考えて、どれも花を活けやすそうないい花器だなあなどと見ていたが、その横の説明を読んで、、、はじめて気がついた。これらはすべて薬を入れていた壺だった。
これらの壷が作られた１６世紀当時のスペインでは、薬はその多くが修道院等で処方・管理されていて、それらの壷にはよく見ると様々な修道会、イエズス会、ドミニコ会、フランチェスコ会などの紋章が入っている。そいういえば、フィレンツェのサンタマリアノベッラにもこんな壺があったのを思い出した。

At the floor of the permanent collection of the Decorative Art Museum, Madrid, I was watching the beautiful vases and thought the shapes and designｓ are very appropriate for putting the flowers. However, looking at the description, I realized that these were not flower vases but medicine bottles. In 16th century, abbeys such as Jesuit and Dominican organized the pharmacy and prescribed drags.
